The New York Times is proud to announce its 2009 Tribute to Nurses Program. This special section, which will publish on November 22, 2009 in The New York Times Magazine, will help to bring attention to the field of nursing by recognizing several nurses' contributions to the field. This year, we are soliciting nominations from those people who know these nurses abilities best: those they work with everyday. To ensure we recognize the most outstanding in the field, we need your help.

During 2009 National Nurses Week, several nurses from your hospital were likely recognized by your organization for their exemplary on-the-job performance. In order to recognize these nurses on a broader level, only nurses who were nominated for an award during their hospital's National Nurses Week recognition programs are eligible for a 2009 Tribute to Nurses award. As part of the submission process, we will require that you, the nominator, provide documentation that shows he/she was nominated for and/or won an award during National Nurses Week 2009.

Please complete the form and attach the nurse's application/write up for 2009 National Nurses Week no later than August 1, 2009.

Please note that the following guidelines exist for 2009 Tribute to Nurses:

  • To be considered for a 2009 Tribute to Nurses award, nominees must have been recognized during National Nurses Week 2009.
  • Nurses must be nominated by a coworker at the same hospital (employment verification will be conducted for both the nominee and nominator).
  • Nurses must work in one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or Pennsylvania.
  • Nominations must be received by no later than August 1, 2009.

2009 Tribute to Nurses Awards: Nurses will be nominated in one of the following five categories:

  • Leadership
  • Education
  • Research
  • Innovation
  • Service to Community

Within each category, The New York Times, along with its panel of CNO Advisors, will select one winner, one finalist and two honorable mentions. This number is subject to change based on number of submissions.

Each category winner will receive an award of $1,500 and will be invited to The New York Times Tribute to Nurses Awards Breakfast - scheduled for December 10, 2009.
